Merchants & potentates: between North Africa & Europe
16
JULY
2012
The paper will examine some of the commercial activities of North Africa Jewish merchants in Libya – the historic regions of Tripolitania & Cyrenaica - and European trading centers - during the 19th century. The region was once home to a flourishing cultural and economic life with many merchants active in the trans-Sahara trade. The country came under Ottoman rule from mid 16th century followed by a series of pashas and potentates until Ottoman control was regained mid 19th century and Italian rule from 1911.
The presentation will show some of the wide variety of archival material and its importance in reconstructing the genealogy and life of North African Jews in places where there are few available records. It makes use of a wide range of sources including travel accounts, consular reports, economic journals and the historical Jewish press as well as archival resources in Israel, England, Italy & France.
The paper will be accompanied by a Power Point Presentation
