In the 1860s, period of the first registration of Jewish students in European universities, until 1914 and the closure of the borders of Europe, one can witness a vast migratory movement of the Russian Jewish youth to the universities of Western Europe, which have the double interest to be open, without restriction, to both Jews and women. In half a century, they are tens of thousands to attend the Swiss, French and German universities. The University archives have kept track of this particular phenomenon, in the heart of the contemporary Jewish migration. Through the registration of the students, it is possible to trace a part of the route of these student populations that their fate has subsequently trained on most various roads, between returns to Russia, settlement in the countries where they were studying or new migrations to the Americas or Palestine.
