Lecture presented by Rhoda Miller.

The core of the proposed presentation is largely unexplored topic of the participation of the Jewish organizations, HIAS/HICEM in particular, in the underground activities in France from 1940 until liberation in 1944. After Germany invaded France in mid-1940, HICEM closed its Paris offices, moving to Marseille in the so-called “free zone” of France, and to Lisbon, Portugal. Until November 11, 1942, HICEM employees were at work in French internment camps looking for Jews who met U.S. State Department immigration requirements and were ready to leave France. At the same time, HICEM employees were involved with such underground organizations as Rue Amelot and Andre Service. With the German occupation of the France “free zone”, HICEM moved to the town of Brive-la-Gaillarde in Correze. Here a small group of HICEM employees – establishing contact and cooperation with the local underground forces of the French resistance – succeeded in smuggling Jews out of France to Spain and Switzerland. Some of twenty-one HICEM employees perished in the line of duty, were deported and killed in the concentration camps or shot as the members of resistance; others were killed in direct combat with the Nazis. The talk will include the case studies of some HICEM employees, those who survived and those who perished.
