Interesting Facts

Here are some interesting statistics about the conference (as of August 2 and based on those who responded to the various questions):

  • Attendees are coming from a total of 21 countries. Not suprisingly, the largest number are from the United States (87%). The next highest numbers are Canada (3.3%), Israel (1.7%), Austalia (1.1%), and the United Kingdom (0.9%). The full list is below.

  • Of those coming from the United States, the greatest number are, again not surprisingly, from Massachusetts (34%). Runners up are New York (11%), California (9%), Florida (6%), Maryland (6%), New Jersey (5%), and Connecticut (3%). In all, 38 states of the 51 (counting the District of Columbia) are represented. The full list is below.

  • Of the attendees, only 9% are new to genealogical research, while 54% have been doing research for 10 years or more!

  • On the other hand, 42% are attending their first IAJGS conference!

  • About 64% of the attendees belong to a Jewish Genealogical Society, and more than 57% belong to a Special Interest Group (SIG).

  • Of those who belong to a JGS, the most popular is, not surprisingly, the JGS of Greater Boston (34%). Runners up are New York (22%) and Greater Washington (8%).

  • Among those who belong to a SIG, the most popular are those focused on Ukraine (39%), Poland (35%), Belarus (28%), Lithuania (29%), Galicia (28%), Germany (18%), and Romania (16%). The total is more than 100%, of course, because many people belong to more than one SIG.

  • As to level of expertise, 26% consider themselves to be beginners, 49% intermediate, and 24% advanced.

  • Among the attendees, 29 are JGS presidents, 30 are SIG coordinators, 33 are shtetl group leaders, and 32 are BOF or Area Research Group coordinators. The total number of such leaders is only 108 (10% of attendees), so a number of them hold more than one of these positions.

  • Of the people attending the banquet (some of whom are guests of conference attendees), 47% selected the fish meal, 46% the chicken meal, and 7% the vegetarian meal.

  • Almost 20% of people opted to keep their email address private and to have an ID code printed in the Family Finder booklet in place of their email address.
